Educational Oxford
Home to the oldest university in the English speaking world, Oxford is known as the ‘city of dreaming spires’, a phrase composed by the poet Matthew Arnold in reference to the architecture of Oxford's buildings which reflect just about every English architectural style since the arrival of the Saxons more than 1000 years ago. A city steeped in antiquity, now boasting a glorious mix of old and new, it is situated to the east of The Cotswolds.
There are two rivers that run through Oxford: the Cherwell and the Thames. Interestingly, for a distance of about 10 miles through Oxford the Thames is known as the Isis, with a number of rowing regattas being held on this section of the river throughout the year. As one would expect of a university city, books are an important feature of daily life in Oxford. New books, specialist books, and antiquarian books are available for purchase and exchange at a variety of bookshops in this city. A definite must is Blackwell’s Books, where one could almost get lost in the labyrinth that is created by the massive selection of books they stock – a bibliophile’s heaven. With shopping in mind, Oxford is home to the oldest covered market in England, in High Street, and is worth more than a few hours spent exploring the many interesting little shops situated here, that include a chocolatier, a milliner, a glassware shop, and some charming cafes, in which you can rest your weary feet while you satiate your appetite. A visit to Oxford is entirely incomplete without a visit to at least a few of the city’s museums and galleries. The first recommendation is for the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, which includes 3 centuries worth of collections and the largest display of dinosaur remains outside of London, not to mention being home to nesting Swifts from May to August. The second recommendation is for a visit to Modern Art Oxford, a gallery devoted to renowned contemporary artists and photographers, with regular talks and workshops.
